Writer’s Bootcamp #2: How To Construct A Plot, or A.B.A.I.

ABAI copy

Do you see that up there? I want you to commit that to mind RIGHT NOW. Do whatever you need to do to remember it, I don’t give a shit. Memorize, write it down, tattoo it on your body, whatever it takes. (more…)

Writer’s Bootcamp #1: Creating Fantastic Characters

female-silhouette5

Time after time do I see people sit down and create bullshit characters that no one gives a fuck about, are completely cliche and offer nothing unique, original, or don’t even bring fresh perspective to already established archetypes. I’m going to put a stop to that. Here’s what you NEED to know to create characters worth a damn. (more…)

Introducing Writer’s Bootcamp

rlee

You want to be a writer, a storyteller? Alright, fine.

See, it’s been a while since we’ve done some serious blogging over here. What can I say, we were off WRITING and PROMOTING our own work. That’s what writers do. They WRITE. People have been asking me to sit down and do a writer’s bootcamp for a while now; I shied away from it, too worried about how people might react or someone getting their little FEELINGS hurt. Final Notable Quotable of 2013: Study Greatness

tm

“Study! Do your homework! I used to always tell you, do your homework. Get footage! How the fuck are you going to know how to be great if you don’t study GREATNESS?!” ~Tracy Morgan, 2012

Well, here we are. Closing out a third year of writing and telling narrative. This year was a very, er… MIXED year. I won’t really get into that, but I think it was successful in some choice aspects. The first book of The Twisted World came out, and we’re well on our way into the next book with hopes that it will also be out this summer. (more…)

Rogue Legacy: One of the Most Important Stories of 2013

roguelegacy

Rogue Legacy. Have you heard of it? Likely not.

An independent video game released by Cellar Door Games (consisting of brothers Kenny and Teddy Lee), Rogue Legacy is, for lack of a better descriptor, a ball-buster of a game. Taking inspiration from both platforming titles and the classic roguelike genre, your goal as a player is to traverse a procedurally generated castle that changes its internal shape each time that it is entered. But we’re not here to talk about game mechanics, we’re here to talk about story. (more…)

15 Things Every Aspiring Author Needs To Hear

oc

This is the School of Authorial Hard Knocks 101 and I’ll be your instructor, Mr. Campbell. We don’t have a sliding scale here, this course is pass or fail. Decide now.

Yep. I said them all, and you can quote me on them. If you need a reminder, print this out and tape it up in your work area (as a bonus, these all fit under 140 characters, so you can tweet the life out of them with ease).

How Do You Destroy A Man? Or; The Difference Between Literary Fiction and Genre Fiction

tortured

You better kill me afterwards, because if you don’t… I’m coming for you.

Some days ago, I posed a simple question to friends on Facebook (unlike other people, I don’t use Facebook for playing games and other tom foolery; I actually use it as it was intended in the beginning, as a communication medium!)

I asked them, “How do you destroy a man without killing him?” Their answers were intriguing and insightful. (more…)

Notable Quotable: You Acquiesce To Defeat

killbill

It’s the wood that should fear your hand, not the other way around. No wonder you can’t do it, you acquiesce to defeat before you even begin.

~Chia Hui (Gordon) Liu, Kill Bill Vol. 2 (2004)

There’s a lot of stuff out there that’s scary to do, and obviously writing is one of them. So many times I hear people say, “I can’t” or they’ll make up dozens upon dozens of excuses to not do what they were supposed to do, MEANT to do. And the sad thing is, they don’t have enough respect for themselves to even TRY.  (more…)

Notable Quotable: It’s Up To You to Make It Happen

canthardlywait

I waited there outside, and I was the first person when he pulled up. He got out of that car, and he was so beautiful. He looked right at me… and I didn’t know what to do! I mean, I couldn’t say anything, I couldn’t even move. I never even talked to him and he was RIGHT THERE… I still have that red bandanna.

The thing is, you never know, you know? Had I at least said SOMETHING…. you never know.

Anyway, the point is I totally realized, fate! There IS fate. But it only takes you so far, because once you’re there it’s up to you to make it happen.

~Jenna Elfman, Can’t Hardly Wait (1998)

What is fate? What is opportunity? Are they not the same thing? Maybe fate isn’t as complex as a series of events that will always play out regardless of the actions that you take. Maybe fate is just a synonym for opportunity, moments where everything is positioned JUST RIGHT for you to take an action, to move forward.  (more…)

Defining And Conquering Fear

batman

The thing that draws people subconsciously to Batman is that Batman has taken his life fears and transmogrified them into a weapon. A tool, as it were.

Let’s have a conversation today. Let’s talk a little bit about fear.

You may have heard me say this a few times before: “Courage isn’t having a lack of fear. Courage is continuing to act in the FACE of fear.” (more…)
